The Space Applications and Environmental Science Laboratory (SPAEL) was established in the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in January 2005 and has been working in partnership with the Green Development Initiative (GDI), Port-Harcourt since 2010. SPAEL has two main units which are Geo informatics and Climate Change. The laboratory has been involved in the pursuit of scientific endeavour by engaging in various researches and consultancies which are geared towards sustainable growth and development in the areas of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System, Climate Change, Environmental Protection etc.

SPAEL Mision

The Space Applications and Environmental Science Laboratory’s (SPAEL) mission is to equip students and researchers with requisite skills in the applications of remote sensing and GIS required for diverse and/or complex environmental analysis.

The Laboratory’s main goal is to map out, describe, analyze and interpret the spatial distribution of natural resources such as soil, forestry and forest resources, ecology, tourism, environmental impact surveys, climatic pattern and water resources management.
