This module examines remotely sensed data and how it can be effectively integrated into a GIS, how GIS procedures can assist information extraction from remote sensing data. It covers data collection by airborne and satellite platforms and discusses resolution, electro-magnetic spectrum, classification strategies and sampling techniques. Participants will be engaged in series of exercises; both practical demonstrations and hands-on.

The module explores advanced topics in spatial analysis using the raster data model and 3D environment. Lectures and extensive hands-on exercises include topics covering surface analysis, integration with vector-based analysis, spatial modelling techniques, and issues in managing raster and 3D datasets. Topics in 3D analysis and modelling will include dataset reconstruction, visualization, terrain analysis, and 3D modelling.

This module uses the concept of geographic information science to better understand spatial patterns of environmental change, epidemiology, and health service delivery. Specific topics covered include disease events, incidences, diffusion, transmission, and service delivery modelling. Broader topic discussed include emmerging infectious diseases, climate change, and biodefense. The module will interest those concerned with public health and policy, environmental change, and the geography of health.

This module reviews the application of spatial and geostatistics to GIS analysis. Using the concept of transformation, the module explores such techniques as point-pattern analysis, spatial auto-correlation, and interpolation using advanced tools found in ArcGIS spatial, geostatistical, and 3D - Analyst as well as time-series analysis. This module is taught from an interdisciplinary perspective and would interest anyone who works with spatial data and want to extend GIS beyond traditional geoprocessing.

The module introduces network structures, routes, and dynamic segmentation with modelling shortest path, location and allocation, vehicle routing, and traffic assignment. It discusses the integration of intelligent trasportation system (ITS), GPS, GIS, and transportation modelling and planning. Participants will use a GIS transportation analysis package to complete a series of exercises.

This module will introduce students to real-world examples of how GIS can be used to investigate and resolve water-resource issues. Topics will vary from general hydrologic-modeling to specific case studies that examine watershed characterization, bathymetric modeling, and mapping of water and environmental features. The emphasis of this module is to develop useful analytical GIS skills while examining the natural water environment around you.

This module will introduce students to real-world examples of how GIS can be used to investigate and resolve urban and regional planning issues. Topics will vary from urban area interpretation and analysis using satellite imagery as well as aerial photographs, GIS application in large-scale mapping for cadastral database real estate and urban areas to specific case studies that examine residential area evaluation and methods of population estimation.

This module examines the uses of GIS in law enforcement relating to how human behavior is mapped and analyzed for strategic deployment purposes. Crime, calls for service, and demographic data will be analyzed to illustrate the various GIS tools used by law enforcement analysts to address issues related to public disorder. The module discusses crime mapping and analysis. Participants will use ArcGIS to analyze crime series, conduct problem analysis, study crime trends, and address deployment issues as they relate to law enforcement.

GIS is an invaluable tool for government and private agencies responsible for managing emmergency situations or natural disasters. This module covers everything from establishing pre-plans for any event, incident mapping and analysis, establishing service areas and evacuation routes, Emmergency Operation Centres - EOCs activation and more. ArcGIS and other software applications are used to demonstrate how to effectively prepared, manage and quickly recover from emmergency events.

GIS has a long history with regards to applications in the natural resources arena. This module provides an overview of how GIS can be applied in environmental and natural issues. Issues on forest management are address ranging from forest classification and mapping, forest inventory, and ecosystem analysis to policy planning. Sources ot terrain, natural resources, and environmental data are also reviewed and case studies of specific applications are provided. The module includes a significant hands-on component.

This module examines the business and marketing applications of GIS technology such as proximity analysis, site location determination, and market delineation. It discusses where businesses find, and how they create socioeconomic and demographic data, how data is integrated into GIS, and why it is important. The module is case study and exercise focused. Participants will explore business GIS analysis and investigate the integration of map and report presentation in hardcopy as well as digital format.

Majority of information needed for effective weather forecast are spatial in nature. GIS provides a new way to look at, examine, and analyze weather and climate data, weather conditions and phenomena, and numerical weather predictions and forecasts. GIS also provides a cost effective means for manipulation of these spatial data which can be modified or upgraded to accommodate new information as soon as they are available. Participants who are seeking to gain proficiency in GIS, particularly in the area of weather forecast will benefit immensely from this training.

This module provides an overview of how GIS can be applied in agriculture and food security issues. Participants will learn how to locate and map agricultural fields: soil fertility, estimate crop yields, regions of pest and disease infestations. Participants will also be introduced to GPS-based precision crop input applications through variability rate technology.

This module introduces the use of GIS in sustainable development as an holistic environmental impact assessment tool. Participants will learn how to use GIS for: prediction and evaluation of direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of environmental projects, selection of environmental parameters, collection of spatial information through field surveys and monitoring of interventions.
